Lake Lanier ShoreSweep: Protecting Our Lake, One Shoreline at a Time
The annual Lake Lanier ShoreSweep brings together hundreds of volunteers with a common goal: to keep one of Georgia’s most treasured lakes clean and beautiful. This large-scale cleanup event spans miles of shoreline, tackling the buildup of trash and debris that accumulates throughout the year. As Lake Lanier is a major water source and recreational area, preserving its cleanliness is critical to maintaining its natural beauty and protecting local wildlife.
Our Impact: Cleaning the Shores, Saving the Lake
ShoreSweep is not just about picking up litter—it’s about ensuring the long-term health of Lake Lanier’s ecosystem. Over the years, our volunteers have removed thousands of pounds of waste from the lake’s waters and shorelines. From small items like plastic bottles and fishing lines to larger debris such as abandoned tires, docks, and discarded appliances, each piece of trash taken out of the lake is a step toward cleaner, safer water.
In the most recent ShoreSweep, 120 volunteers removed debris and trash from more than 20 designated zones around the lake. In addition to clearing trash, our efforts have helped protect wildlife, such as birds, fish, and other species that depend on a clean environment to thrive.
Notable Findings: Items collected in previous years have included old boat parts, broken docks, fishing gear, tires, and even household furniture—highlighting the scale and importance of the cleanup effort.
