Community Garden
At the Lambert Community Garden, we believe that nurturing a garden is about more than just growing plants—it’s about cultivating a deeper understanding of the environment and how we can work with nature to create sustainable spaces. Our garden serves as a hands-on learning space where people of all ages can learn essential gardening skills, from layering soil and planting seeds to creating nutrient-rich compost.
Mastering the Art of Soil Layering
Good soil is the foundation of any thriving garden. At Lambert, we teach participants how to properly layer soil, starting with a rich base of organic matter and topping it with nutrient-dense soil to create an environment where plants can flourish. This method mimics natural ecosystems, promoting better water retention, root growth, and plant health
Planting and Watering for Success
Planting is more than just placing seeds in the ground. We guide our participants through every step of the process—selecting the right seeds for the season, planting them at the correct depth, and ensuring that they have the right amount of space to grow. Our teaching doesn’t stop there—we also provide lessons on proper watering techniques, emphasizing the balance between hydration and overwatering, so that seedlings can develop strong, resilient roots.
Creating Nutrient-Rich Compost
One of the most important lessons at the Lambert Community Garden is how to make compost. By recycling organic waste like vegetable scraps, leaves, and garden clippings, participants learn how to create their own compost—a powerful, natural fertilizer that enriches the soil and promotes healthy plant growth. Composting not only reduces waste but also closes the loop in sustainable gardening, helping plants thrive without the need for chemical fertilizers.
